Dear Mom,

The big question which shocked parents often ask their child after a confrontational(冲突) moment is, \"Where did you get this attitude from?\" I know you hate to admit it, but I get much of my determined and strong-willed nature from you.

Mom, I know it's hard dealing with the teenage anxiety and the ever-changing moods that come with raising a child. But you should also marvel at the fact that I've made it this far, that I'm healthy and happy.

When I was small, I would attend barbecues and family events and wander away from my parents. It wouldn't be long before someone would stop me to ask whether I was my mother's daughter.

\"Your mom is Melissa,\" they'd say, a warm smile on their faces. \"Is that Tight?\" I would nod. I think parents feel much hurt when their child talks back or defies them, I was shocked at this statement. To me, I acted nothing like you, Mom.

No one says, \"I know you're Melissa's daughter because of your eyes and nose\". It's the character traits(特点)that seal the deal. Dry wit, intelligence, and yes, maybe a little bit of attitude-these are the things I am grateful I have received from you. There's nothing wrong with having attitude.

Like for most black individuals, attitude is what defines you and me, and it's what keeps us from being mentally oppressed and defeated. Attitude is a non-violent form of protection and confrontation-where would we be in the world without this tool? Surely not where we are. Mom, when people ask me where I get my attitude from, I tell them: you. And when they ask me where I got my drive, my work ethic, my good hair, and my sense of humor, I say you as well. I will always say this.

When I'm asked why I am the way I am, why I refuse to allow others to hurt me with their words or actions and why I think and speak about things openly and without fear. I'll tell them it's because of you.

I'll complain to you about the arguments between us that leave me wondering about how God made us so much alike that we hardly even noticed. But I'll tell them about you.

Love, Malahni

(1)In this letter, Malahni mainly expressed her to her mother. A.complaint B.love C.argument D.anxiety

(2)People recognized Malahni as Melissa's daughter mainly because of her . A.appearance B.behavior

C.character traits D.race

(3)The underlined word \"defies\" in the 4th paragraph most probably means . A.refuses to obey B.agrees with C.takes pride in D.tries to understand

(4)Malahni can be a woman . A.easy to be oppressed and defeated B.hard to get along with

C.with a positive attitude towards life D.with violent confrontation 【答案】 (1)B (2)C (3)A (4)C

根据第一段中的“I know you hate to admit it, but I get much of my determined and strong-willed nature from you.”我知道你不愿意承认这一点,但我从你身上学到了很多我的坚强意志;以及倒数第二段中的“When I'm asked why I am the way I am, why I refuse to allow others to hurt me with their words or actions and why I think and speak about things openly and without fear. I'll tell them it's because of you.”

根据第五段中的“It's the character traits that seal the deal. Dry wit, intelligence, and yes, maybe a little bit of attitude-these are the things I am grateful I have received from you. There's nothing wrong with having attitude.”

根据第四段中的“parents feel much hurt when their child talks back or”可知父母在他们的孩子顶嘴或反抗他们时感到很受伤,故划线单词意思为“反抗;拒绝服从”故选A。

根据第二段中的“But you should also marvel at the fact that I've made it this far, that I'm healthy and happy.”

Brian Greene, a professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, has created an online science education platform. He tries to \"build a bridge\" with things you know about, and then \"bring you across that bridge to the strange place of modern physics\".

Recently I had a chance to ask Greene about wormholes (a hole which some scientists think might exist, connecting parts of space and time that are not usually connected), time travel and other mysteries of the universe. I asked him a million-dollar question: What if I went through a worm-hole and prevented my parents from meeting? \"Most of us believe that the universe makes sense,\" Greene said. Although there are several interesting theories about time travel, he added, the laws of physics would probably prevent something so illogical from taking place. The good news is that the time paradox (悖论) is open for future physicists to solve.

When asked how physics could become more exciting for kids, Greene said that books by Stephen Weinberg, Leonard Susskind, and other physicists,\" make it a great time for people who want to learn about big ideas but aren't yet ready, perhaps, to learn maths\".

When I pointed out that some students still might find physics boring, Greene said that the key is to teach them about things that are strange.\" The basic stuff is important,\" Greene said.\" But I think it's really important to also describe the more modern ideas, things like black holes and the Big Bang. If kids have those ideas in mind, then at least some of them will be excited to learn all the details.\"

Greene has followed Albert Einstein's lead in trying to solve the mysteries of the universe. Now he wants kids to do the same. As Greene said, physics is \"not just a matter of solving problems in an exam\". It's about experimenting, showing an interest in strange phenomena (现象)—and having fun!

(1)A million-dollar question is probably very . A.direct B.difficult C.personal D.long

(2)The books by Weinberg and Susskind . A.are boring to read B.are mainly about maths C.are popular science books D.are only popular among kids

(3)According to Paragraph 4,which of the following does Greene agree with? A.Modern physics is a boring subject. B.Interest plays an important role in studying. C.It is not necessary to learn all about physics. D.It is easy to describe black holes and the Big Bang. (4)In the last paragraph, Greene hopes that .

A.kids can love science and physics B.kids can do well in physics exams C.kids can have fun with experiments D.kids can find more strange things in life 【答案】 (1)B (2)C (3)B (4)A

根据第三段中的“…books by…‘make it a great time for people who want to learn about big ideas but aren't yet ready, perhaps, to learn maths'.”

根据最后一段中的“Greene has followed Albert Einstein's lead in trying to solve the mysteries of the universe. Now he wants kids to do the same.” 故选A。

In order to learn a foreign language well, four things are necessary. First, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, with confidence and without hesitation(犹豫). Thirdly, we must do much reading. Finally, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.

There are no shortcuts to success in language learning. A good memory is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is not much learning by heart long lists of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language.

If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must \"learn through use.\" Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.

(1)The most important things to learn a foreign language are .

A. understanding and speaking B. Listening, speaking, reading and writing

C. writing and understanding D. memorizing and listening

(2)Someone hears and writes English very well, but he speaks it very badly. This is because . A.he doesn't understand the language when he hears it spoken B.he doesn't have a good memory

C.he always remembers lists of words and their meanings D.he often hesitates(犹豫)to practise speaking it

(3)One can never learn a foreign language well by . A.doing much practice B.studying the dictionary C.learning through use D.using the language

(4)Which is the most important in learning a foreign language? A.good memory. B.Speaking. C.Practice. D.Writing. 【答案】 (1)B (2)D (3)B (4)C

A recent documentary produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has caused a stir in China and in the UK.

The documentary, titled Are Our Kids Tough Enough? focuses on five Chinese teachers who are sent to teach 50 UK teens at a school in Hampshire.

The teachers instruct the students for a month. The pupils are then tested, and the results are compared to the ones of those who have continued in the regular UK education system. The idea is to see if the Chinese method improves academic performance.

The Chinese teachers use their own teaching methods but receive strong resistance from the students. A clip from the documentary online shows some problems, with Chinese teachers calling their students lazy and lacking in discipline, while the students say the high pressure and harsh teachers are driving them crazy.

This has aroused a new debate in both China and the UK, with some arguing the teenagers need more regulation and discipline. Others say Chinese methods encourage rote learning (死记硬背) instead of independent thinking. For instance, Chinese language teachers should do more than pass on knowledge about words and characters. They should inspire students, helping them feel the sentiment from Chinese literature. This is a higher level of teaching.

Yang Dongping, dean of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, says, \"The Chinese teaching methods are designed to strictly train the majority. Foreign teaching methods, however, are more natural and relaxing, and designed to inspire students' interest in learning. Education methods are based on culture. That is why a successful education method in one place may not work that well when simply 'transplanted' into another place.\"

Yang Dongping says, \"The documentary does reflect some problems rooted in traditional Chinese teaching methods. Nobel prize winner, Yang Zhenning, gave a very fair comment on this issue. He said the Chinese-style education method works for most ordinary qualified students effectively, helping them reach high standards. However, it may weaken the training for high-potential outstanding students.\"

(1)Why are five Chinese teachers sent to teach 50 UK teens?

A.To test the intelligence of the UK teens.

B.To help the school improve their teaching efficiency. C.To do some practical research into the UK education system. D.To test the effectiveness of Chinese teaching methods.

(2)What's the meaning of the underlined word \"harsh\" in the fourth paragraph? A.Extremely strict B.Quite friendly C.Rather cold D.Very attractive

(3)According to Yang Dongping Chinese teaching methods ______. A.fit all countries B.could be improved C.are the best in the world D.are not as good as British methods 【答案】 (1)D (2)A (3)B

根据倒数第二段中的“The Chinese teaching methods are designed to strictly train the majority. Foreign teaching methods, however, are more natural and relaxing, and designed to inspire students' interest in learning. Education methods are based on culture.”

Young mums shopping in the Copley Mall in downtown Boston-month found themselves being questioned about their use of soap by students from Harvard Business School usually known as

HBS. The students were not doing odd jobs to earn beer money. They were preparing to help a firm in Brazil launch an antibacterial cleanser.

The 900 students arriving in Boston this summer for their two-year course were told that they would be subjects. The new practical addition to HBS's curriculum is known as \"FIELD\" that stands for Field Immersion Experiences for Leadership Development. Fieldwork — ie, going out and talking to people — is a big change for HBS.

Not all the staff and students were overjoyed to be experimented on. But the man responsible, Nitin Nohria, head of HBS, says that \"If it works, the FIELD method could become an equal partner to the case method.\"

What happens in the second year of the new course is still being worked out. But the first year has three elements. First, team-building exercises. Students take turns to lead a group engaged in a project. They learn to cooperate and to give and take feedback. Second, students will be sent to work for a week with one of more than 140 firms in 11 countries. In the third part of the course, students will be given eight weeks, and seed money of $3,000 each, to launch a small company. The most successful, as voted by their fellow students, will get more funding. The experiment does not come cheap, adding 5-10% to the course's cost, which HBS will bear while it figures out what works.

(1)Why were the students questioning those young mums, according to the first paragraph? A.To promote an antibacterial cleanser. B.To earn some money.

C.To prepare to help a firm to launch a product. D.To make a study about soap.

Food experts say washing could spread the germs on your turkey in the kitchen sink or nearby food. But it's been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop rinsing (冲洗)off raw poultry. Germs that can make people sick are common in the guts of healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on raw turkey and chicken. The assumption is that nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough cooking will kill the bacteria.

The do — not — wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn't caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a study author and food safety expert at North Carolina State University, said the instinct to wash raw poultry goes back at least decades when people relied more on visual clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile, washing hands and surfaces are also important.

But food preparation is a complicated act, and germs from poultry can be spread even if it's not washed, especially when birds are removed from packaging.

The USDA-funded study stresses that point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a harmless strain of E. coli (大肠杆菌)and watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.

To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees. Even after the meal is cooked, you aren't out of the danger zone. To keep turkeys and other leftovers safe, experts say they should be refrigerated after two hours.

(4)From which section of a magazine is the text probably taken? A.Culture. B.Science. C.Education. D.Medicine.

根据第二段中的“The do — not — wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn't caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman.” 根据第四段中的“Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.”

根据最后一段中的“To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees.”

We may be living in the digital age but reading books is still a big part of growing up. When they're in primary school, children read books that really challenge them. But once they reach secondary school, the level of difficulty doesn't change much. Secondary school students tend to read books which are also read by upper primary students. They are not challenging themselves enough.

To discover these trends, I analyzed data collected by Accelerated Reader (AR) software, which asks pupils to check their understanding of the books they've chosen to read. The difficulty — which I call \"readability\".

I also created two lists of books: one for the books that most secondary pupils had chosen to read, and another for the books they had voted as their favorites. According to the readability, these students' favorite books tend to be much more advanced than the other books they chose, but they could still understand them. The rest of the books most often chosen by them are quite simple.

You might think that students who read harder books might make more mistakes and understand them less well. But students' quality of comprehension does not depend on the difficulty of the book, no matter what year of secondary school they're in. Having an interest is the most obvious factor here — if you like the book, you try hard to really understand it. As children become teenagers, they listen less to advice from adults and more to advice from kids of their age. So, rather than trying to lecture young people on the benefits of Jane Austen, we should make the nature of the problem clear to them. Students should challenge each other to read more difficult books. Adults could help by setting up noticeboards or organizing social media networks for young people to share their recommendations. And teachers can lend a hand by setting aside time for reading in school. Young people will realize the problems that come when they don't challenge themselves to read difficult books. (1)What can we learn from the first paragraph? A.Children spend little time on after-class reading B.Secondary school students seldom read tough books C.Children's reading interest tends to decrease as they grow up D.Primary students have difficulty choosing good reading materials (2)The author made use of AR software to ________. A.understand children's different reading styles B.show the average time children spend on reading C.find out the causes of children's reading difficulties D.make clear the difficulty levels of books read by children

(3)What can we infer about secondary school students from the readability scores? A.They find some advanced books interesting B.They often make mistakes during advanced reading

C.They prefer to read books recommended by their parents D.They can hardly improve their scores on reading comprehension

(4)According to Paragraph 4, what is vital for improving reading comprehension? A.Basic knowledge B.Reading skills C.Motivation D.Instruction

(5)What does the author want to express in the last paragraph? A.Designing relatively difficult textbooks is necessary B.Improving students' reading is a shared responsibility C.Advanced technology should be used in reading reaching D.Students should be encouraged to read more literary works 【答案】 (1)B (2)D (3)A (4)C (5)B

根据第一段中的“But once they reach secondary school, the level of difficulty doesn't change much. Secondary school students tend to read books which are also read by upper primary students. They are not challenging themselves enough.”

根据第二段中的“To discover these trends, I analyzed data collected by Accelerated Reader (AR) software, which asks pupils to check their understanding of the books they've chosen to read. The difficulty — which I call ‘readability’.”

根据第三段中的“According to the readability, these students' favorite books tend to be much more advanced than the other books they chose, but they could still understand them. The rest of the books most often chosen by them are quite simple.”

根据第四段中的“Having an interest is the most obvious factor here — if you like the book, you try hard to really understand it.”

Students should challenge each other to read more difficult books. Adults could help by setting up noticeboards or organizing social media networks

for young people to share their recommendations. And teachers can lend a hand by setting aside time for reading in school. Young people will realize the problems that come when they don't challenge themselves to read difficult books.”
